‘Niki’ – Training for performance #9

In his new series of work entitled Training for performance, visual and performance artist PASHIAS attempts to establish an active connection between the art of performance and the field of athleticism, by drawing upon the positioning of the human body as an agent of energy, skill, aesthetic qualities and potentiality, as used in the activity of sports. Through an examination of what it means to ‘compete’ and to ‘complete’ a specific aim, the body comes in contact with an other entity – the audience – or with the parameters of its own self. By drawing upon references from the time of antiquity to our present sociocultural context, PASHIAS creates an interdisciplinary sport, where the body ‘in action’ is presented as a political body that confirms, tests and disrupts the functioning of a social ensemble.

The practice of Greek Cypriot visual artist PASHIAS is grounded in the field of performance art, installation and photography. By establishing the artist’s body as the basic material for creation, PASHIAS sets up a situation or environment, in which an audience is invited to initiate a process of ‘action’ and ‘re-action’. Based on the relationship of a unit towards an ensemble, in a similar manner to how an individual is received or perceived within a social setting, the artist’s body is dismantled into a set of pieces, physical parts, habits or ideas, then physically and conceptually reshaped by the ‘stance’ of audience members. Through the artist’s on-going research into social constructions (body + gender), cultural consumption (body + food) and competitive spectacles (body + sports), PASHIAS ultimately sets out to investigate alternative modes of communication through presence, exchange and co-existence. At this ‘meeting’ point, the body in action inevitably becomes a political body, aware and responsible for its time and place.

PASHIAS has presented solo exhibitions in Cyprus and Greece, whilst participating in group exhibitions and international festivals in the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Russia, Norway, Finland, Estonia, Sweden, Bulgaria and Turkey. More specifically, he has collaborated with cultural organizations, such as the Marina Abramovic Institute, Estonian Contemporary Art Museum, Besancon Institut Supérieur des Beaux Arts, Mediterranean Biennale of Contemporary Art and Toulouse International Art Festival. PASHIAS co-founded in 2013 the epitelesis – Performance Art Foundation as an international platform for the support of cultural activities, has been engaged in curating exhibitions and series of events on the relationship of live action to other artistic practices, and has been working as an educator/lecturer through various academic programs.
